February 2024 - Exciting Times to Come!
The Heritage Lottery has awarded Bardsey Island Trust (BIT) £246,000 to fund many exciting projects over the next three years. This money has also allowed the Bardsey Island Trust to fund a Project Officer (Gwenllian Hughes) and a Building Conservation Manager (Owen Rickards). The aim of the projects are to attract more people to the island, including people from different demographics who may have not had an opportunity to experience Ynys Enlli’s (Bardsey Island's) unique peace.
The projects that will be underway soon are:
-
Brenin Enlli and Diaspora
-
Enlli Historical, Spiritual and Religious Heritage
-
Oral and Photographic Histories
-
Social Inclusion and Heritage
-
Dark Sky Sanctuary and Webcam Project
-
Educational and Engagement Heritage
These projects will require the cooperation of many organisations, including local schools such as Ysgol Crud y Werin, Aberdaron. Over the next three years, many events will be arranged for each project, which will be held on the mainland of Pen Llŷn. A project of particular excitement is the Dark Sky Sanctuary. We look forward to arranging the events that will celebrate our NEW status!
The role of the Building Conservation Manager will be to plan, restore and maintain Ynys Enlli’s built heritage. There are many preserved buildings on the island that need regular maintenance due to them being open to sea elements.
Jacquie Hughes-Jones (Acting Chair of the Bardsey Island Trust) said "This is is an exciting time for Enlli as we start to build on the strengths of our people and grow our team. Next year, and those following, will see us move closer to our ambition of being an ‘exemplar of Welsh Island life’ by restoring our buildings and wider infrastructure and connecting with our wider local community. We are very grateful for this grant funding and look forward to working together towards safeguarding Ynys Enlli for future generations to enjoy, earn a living from, and wonder in its natural, cultural and spiritual bounty."
We look forward to welcoming everyone to Enlli and hope you enjoy getting involved with the new projects here. There is something to interest everyone on Ynys Enlli!
